Hey, Breakthrough Family! Josh here again, this time answering the question:

How does the Christmas story help us understand Jesus' mission?

I think that's not just a really cool question, but a crucial one we should be asking.

When we look at the Christmas story, it shows Jesus being the fulfilment of prophecy and promise. When we understand His mission, we can understand our mission.

Throughout Isaiah, Jesus was prophesied to be born of a virgin (Isaiah 7:14). Other notable figures, like King David, also prophesied about His ruling authority and inheritance of the nations, and how He would break the power of the enemy with an iron rod (Psalm 2). Through this, we see that Christmas isn’t just about a promise fulfilled or Jesus being born, which we celebrate each year, but about God's plan all along to restore us to Him.

This is why I love being part of Breakthrough Academy and how important it has been to my understanding of God's plan, Jesus’ mission, and just how amazing the Christmas story is.

Pastor Peter has taken us through many great topics, like Jesus and Mirror Mirror, where we unpacked just how awesome Jesus is, His mission, and the authority we now have in Him because of what He did for us.

The Christmas story is so important because it shines a spotlight on the very mission of Jesus, and through His sacrifice on the cross for our sins, we now join with Him in His mission to the world.

While on earth, He was sent to the lost sheep of the house of Israel, but Jesus is still carrying out His mission today, working through you and me as we reach out to the ends of the earth.

I absolutely love celebrating Christmas because God makes good on His promises, but each year I’m reminded with fresh urgency that His mission is also my mission: I am to go into all the nations and make disciples of Him.

I join with Jesus in His mission and have been given His authority. His Holy Spirit has equipped me with everything I could ever need to carry out this mission. I've been given the free gift of new life, and now my hope is in Him. I get to be a part of pointing others to Jesus.
