I heard a testimony from someone I admire who has discipled myself and a close friend of mine. This man spoke about identity, discipling, fear and a lot of other important issues.
The encounter he shared was about a guy who had cornered him in the middle of a busy area. This guy said he was full of shame and didn't know how to deal with it.
The man I admire said, “Tell me what it is you feel the most ashamed about” and the guy trembled in fear. My mentor led him to a quiet corner and said, “Fear and shame will keep you from advancing to where God is trying to get you to. You need to step out and tell me what that shame is. You’re in a safe place.” The guy full of shame blurted it all out, then the man I admire grabbed him by the shoulders and told him he couldn't care less.
Can you imagine what would happen if we spoke our fear and shame to Jesus? He would grab that shame and fear and tell us, “I'm going to exchange that very shame and fear for confidence and peace and a brand-new identity as a son of God and joint heir with Jesus Christ.”
The purpose of fear, shame and is to keep us stuck where we are. They separate us from God and keep us conscious of our sin! Praise God, Jesus paid the price that needed to be paid to fulfill that law, once and for all, that removes our sin consciousness.
Romans 8:1 (KJV)
There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.
Andrew Wommack once shared that use of “in” and “after” in Romans 8 are significant. “In” denotes a fixed place or position. “After” denotes a lifestyle. So Christians are “in” Christ and should walk “after” Christ. Yes, it’s possible for a person who is “in” Christ to walk “after” the flesh, but a true Christian cannot be “in” the flesh.
2 Corinthians 5:17 (KJV)
Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.
Once we’re “in” Christ, we’re made brand new and have a brand-new identity. The Word of God (aka the Bible/the Son of God/Jesus) tells us our new identity.
If you are hearing something that contradicts what the Bible says, it is a deception from the father of lies (aka Satan), so we cast it under our feet where it belongs! We then confess our new identity, reminding both us and Satan who we are:
Amen! So be it... it is done!
