Like many of you, I was stunned by the news that Charlie Kirk was shot and killed while speaking at Utah Valley University.

This is not just the loss of a public figure; it’s a wound felt deeply by many believers. When a voice that points unapologetically to Scripture is silenced, we feel that attack personally, as we carry the hope and truth of the gospel. We stand with Erika, the family, and the Turning Point team, praying for comfort, strength and wisdom in the days ahead.

Years ago, I wrestled with a different news story—another act of terrible violence that deeply troubled me—and I asked the Lord how I should respond. He led me to Romans 6:16-22, which reminds us that every day we choose whose instruments we will be: instruments of righteousness or tools in the enemy’s hands.

I cannot undo the evil others commit, or even the wicked responses some people have had to Charlie Kirk’s death. But I can decide that my life will be placed firmly in God’s hands. I will be an instrument in God’s hands.

So here’s my encouragement:

  1. Pray for the family, the ministry, the wider church, and for the healing of a divided nation.
  2. Refuse vengeance. Jesus calls us away from hatred and into a love that overcomes evil with good. “Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good,” Romans 12:21 (NASB).
  3. Commit your life afresh. Be an instrument of righteousness. Let this moment propel you into faithful obedience by sharing the gospel, discipling others, serving your community, and standing for truth with humility and grace.
  4. Carry the message forward. You may not have the same platform, but you have a God-given assignment. Be faithful with it.

Evil wants to paralyse us. The Spirit calls us to move—to pray, to love, to serve, and to witness with renewed courage. That is how we honour a fallen brother in Christ: not with rage, but through resolute obedience to Jesus.
